LoadRunner · /// Alternative
LoadRunner has heritage. LoadGen has the modern stack.
LoadRunner earned its enterprise reputation, but the cockpit is legacy and the scripting model is VuGen. LoadGen ships a wizard-driven, browser-native cockpit with Citrix and AVD scenario wizards, plus the monitoring and API testing LoadRunner doesn’t. Transparent pricing, one platform.

The Fair Version
LoadRunner is a real platform.
No straw-man comparisons. LoadRunner has decades of enterprise installs and a deep scripting ecosystem. These are the strengths a fair-minded buyer should know.
Enterprise scripting heritage
VuGen, Truclient, and the LoadRunner protocol library cover scenarios that very few load tools can match. Earned through years of investment.
Large installed base
LoadRunner sits in many enterprise stacks already. Teams have skills, scripts, and CI integrations built up over a long time. That history has value.
Vendor-backed support
OpenText (the current LoadRunner owner) is a large vendor with formal enterprise-support agreements that many procurement teams prefer.
Why teams move to LoadGen
Three buying-decision walls LoadRunner leaves open.
Teams replacing LoadRunner usually cite the same three friction points: legacy UI, opaque pricing, and the gap where modern EUC platforms (Citrix, AVD, Horizon) need scenario wizards rather than generic protocol replay.
Modern, wizard-driven authoring
A 7-step Citrix wizard captures Basic (ICA) and Enhanced (HDX) scenarios with StoreFront, Gateway, PNAgent, and External Login auth. A 7-step AVD wizard captures AVD scenarios. No VuGen, no brittle hand-scripts.
Same scenario engine, every target
Citrix, AVD, Omnissa Horizon, RDS, Web (Playwright on Core agents), and FAT-client desktops all run through the same scenario engine. One captured .lgs scenario, every target.
Transparent, published pricing
€1,099 / week for Load Testing at the 50-vUser tier; the licence tier scales to 25,000 vUsers. €899 / Agent / month for End-to-End Monitoring. No contact-sales wall to learn whether the tool fits the budget.
Modern cockpit
Real-time and browser-native. No thick client required.
The cockpit ops teams actually want to operate during a run. KPI freshness, sessions table, time-range scrub, and multi-test overlay. All live in the browser. No installer, no remote-desktop hop into the LoadRunner controller.
- Per-step latency, generic p95, and error hotspots visible during the run, not in a post-test report.
- Up to 5 runs overlaid on one chart. Drill into Moments, Errors, and per-step deltas.
- The same cockpit is the live monitoring view after cutover. One engine, two operational modes.
- No VuGen client required to read results. The LoadGen UI is browser-native.
Live cockpit. Per-step latency, generic p95, multi-test overlay.
No-code API flows
API testing where LoadRunner needs Truclient.
LoadGen ships a visual flow editor with a 28-node palette and 21 executable nodes, plus OpenAPI / Swagger import. End-to-end API journey validation lives inside the same platform as your load tests. No separate Truclient project, no separate licence.
- 21 executable nodes spanning flow control, request, data, control, assertion, and Scriban-based built-in transformation.
- OpenAPI / Swagger import scaffolds operations automatically.
- Drag-drop flows author in minutes. Replayable as load tests AND as continuous synthetic checks.
- Same Analytics + AI surface. Alerts route to Email, Webhook, SMS, and WhatsApp.

How teams move
Three patterns for replacing LoadRunner.
Modernise Citrix and AVD testing
Keep LoadRunner for the legacy protocols that still need it. Move the Citrix and AVD scenarios to LoadGen, where the wizards capture them through the same scenario engine.
See use caseConsolidate to one platform
Replace LoadRunner plus the separate monitoring and the separate API tool with LoadGen. Load Testing, End-to-End Monitoring, API Testing, and SessionSight DEM under one vendor.
See use caseBlock releases on regression
Wire LoadGen into the deploy pipeline via the published REST API. Block deploys on generic p95 drift, error-rate regression, or API-flow assertion failure. Instead of running a heavy LoadRunner cycle off-hours.
See use caseSee LoadGen alongside LoadRunner on your own stack.
We’ll author a Citrix or AVD scenario in the wizard on a call, fire it from a managed agent, and walk you through the live cockpit. No Truclient project, no controller install.
Questions
Frequently asked.
Does LoadGen replace LoadRunner, or run alongside it?
Both are common patterns. Many teams initially add LoadGen for Citrix and AVD scenarios where the wizards win on authoring speed, and keep LoadRunner for the legacy protocols still in their portfolio. Others consolidate at the next LoadRunner renewal.
What about our existing LoadRunner scripts (Truclient / VuGen)?
LoadGen does not ingest VuGen or Truclient scripts directly. The authoring model is wizard-driven, not script-replay. In practice, teams re-author the Citrix and AVD scenarios in the LoadGen wizard (which is typically faster than the original VuGen capture) and retain LoadRunner for any niche protocols still required.
How does LoadGen compare on enterprise-scale load?
The published Load Testing licence tier covers 50–25,000 vUsers, and LoadGen has tested 25,000+ users in customer engagements. LoadGen scales with available test infrastructure and agent capacity. Terms run from 1 week to 5 years. Full and VDI agents land per-session on real Citrix and AVD session hosts; Core agents handle HTTP-only workloads.
What does it cost compared to LoadRunner?
LoadRunner pricing is enterprise-negotiated. LoadGen publishes €1,099 per week at the 50-vUser Load Testing tier and €899 per Agent per month for End-to-End Monitoring (annual subs include two months free). See the pricing page for tier details.
Can LoadGen replace LoadRunner Cloud or LoadRunner Enterprise?
For the Citrix, AVD, Omnissa Horizon, RDS, Web, and FAT-client workloads LoadGen ships scenario wizards for, yes. For protocols that only exist in the LoadRunner library, you would either re-author in the LoadGen wizard or retain LoadRunner for that specific surface. We’ll walk through your protocol list on a call.
What’s the path from existing LoadRunner scripts?
Re-author the highest-frequency scenarios in the LoadGen wizard first. Typically the Citrix, AVD, and API flows. Capture the scenario once. Replay across load and monitoring modes. LoadGen Services (consulting and managed runs) is available where in-house bandwidth is tight.
